WEDNESDAY HERO

Welcome to this week's installment where all the member bloggers of Wednesday Hero collectively honor many of the real hero's found in this country who's names and bio's have been provided to us for these humble tributes by blogroll creator Indian Chris @ Right Wing and Right Minded.

Many of them are those that have paid the ultimate price for our country protecting it both here and abroad from the many threats we face from our enemies wishing us and them harm, some are not. In either case they are the real American heroes of today and we now both salute and offer our prayers. This Weeks Soldier Was Suggested By Jenn

Staff Sgt. Darrell R. Griffin Jr.

Staff Sgt. Darrell R. Griffin Jr. 36 years old from Alhambra, California 2nd Battalion, 3rd Infantry Regiment, 3rd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division March 21, 2007

"He was a really patriotic young man", said Darrell Griffin Sr. "He said that the people there really needed us and he felt it was the right place to be. He wished we didn’t have to have wars, but since that’s the way mankind is, he felt he was contributing an important part to his country".

SSgt. Griffin lost his life in Balad, Iraq when his unit came under fire as it was returning to base after conducting security operations in the Iraqi capital.

The eldest son of six children, SSgt. Griffin worked as an EMT before joining the California Army National Guard in 1999. He enlisted in the Army two years later, and in July 2001, was assigned to the 1st Brigade, 25th Infantry Division, in Ft. Lewis, Washington.

He served with that unit in Iraq from October 2004 to September 2005.

On his second tour of duty, SSgt. Griffin had been awarded the Bronze Star for valor in 2005 when he was credited with saving the lives of three U.S. and two Iraqi Army soldiers injured during battle in Tal Afar. He had also received the Army Achievement Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Non-Commissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, Combat Infantry Badge, Expert Infantry Badge, Parachute Badge, and the Meritorious Unit Citation.

"Griff was the type of man you want to have by your side in a fight," Maj. Brent Clemmer, his former company commander, wrote from Iraq. "He was the type of squad leader every young soldier wants to have".

"Darrell was my husband, my Soldier, my gift from God who was also the love of my life and always will be." Said his wife, Diana. "He was also 'a Soldier's Soldier of Strength and Honor' whose commitment to duty, honor and loyalty will be forever remembered by all who know and love him. The news of his death saddens us deeply and we ask for your prayers in our time of grief.

Please also continue to keep our Soldiers in your prayers

This is just Too Cool :)

A whole year after I did a blog post about my Grandfather's service in WW II on the USS Pamanset

Click here: Some of My Family History,Grandad in WW II (Updated)

I am still receiving comments and emails every once in awhile, either from Navy veterans who served with Grandad, or from the children or grandchildren of those veterans. This is one of the things that makes me love the Internet! :)

I also did a post sometime after that one, about my Aunt's service in the Army Nurse Corps during the Vietnam War.

Click here: For My Aunt...A Thank You to an Army Nurse Corps Vietnam Veteran

I haven't received any comments or emails from anyone who thinks they may have served with her, or been under her care, when she served with the 91st Evac in Phu Hiep and Tuy Hoa from August of 1967 to August of 1968...but I'm still hoping!

(Just wanted to say that I went ahead and deleted my post from earlier this week, about sending cooling neck scarves to the guys in  Bad Voodoo Platoon ....turns out someone in the "Hausfrau' network

(the term 'hausfrau' was first applied to supporters of JP when he was deployed in Afghanistan two years ago, by a commenter on his blog, to describe all of us 'motherly' types who were commenting on his blog, and supporting him in various ways )

anyway, turns out someone in the 'Hausfrau' network already had the mission underway,to get the scarves to 'our guys', and at this point we are just waiting to make certain that they will be allowed to wear them, and then the mission will be a 'Go' :)

Lance Cpl. Hatak Yuka Keyu M. Yearby

Lance Cpl. Hatak Yuka Keyu M. Yearby 21 years old from Overbrook, Oklahoma 3rd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division, III Marine Expeditionary Force May 14, 2006

Hatak Yuka Keyu Martin Yearby was remembered in funeral services as a small town boy who balanced his Choctaw tribal heritage and his military life. He did traditional American Indian dances with grace, compassion, discipline and free spirit — "the way he lived his life," the Rev. Timm Emmons said Monday.

"He had a desire to be in the military since he was a young boy. And he believed in what he was doing. He was a warrior, and he was a hero and he finished the course."

Yearby was killed by a roadside bomb, along with fellow Lance Cpl. Jose S. MarinDominguez Jr., in the Al Anbar province of Iraq, two months after he arrived in that country.

Friends and family, fellow American Indians, teachers and classmates filed past his open casket for an hour after the funeral while a U.S. Marine Corps honor guard stood at attention.

About 1,000 people attended a funeral service meant to celebrate the life of the 21-year-old newlywed from Overbrook in southern Oklahoma’s Love County.   Those who spoke in the packed Marietta High School auditorium talked of how he loved to hunt, but never came back with anything. He played tricks, won dancing awards at powwows and appeared on a recruiting magazine for Upward Bound because of a headdress he made from a T-shirt.

Nine of his friends stood on stage to remember Yearby. Jake Barber spoke for them, pausing several times to regain his composure. "Many great words describe Hatak. The only real word you need to say is 'brother'. He will always be known to us as the ace of spades, the most important card in the deck. He touched us so dearly that words cannot explain,".

These brave men and women sacrifice so much in their lives so that others may enjoy the freedoms we get to enjoy everyday. For that, I am proud to call them Hero.

You're Invited to a Virtual baby Shower:)

(Friend and fellow troop supporter Trish sent me the following, please feel free to pass the word along!:)

----------------

I am planning a surprise long-distance baby shower for my friend and former adopted soldier, Martha.

Martha and Seth met while they were both deployed in Iraq. They now live in Kentucky and are expecting their first child (a boy) in August.

Having recently moved to Kentucky, Martha doesn't have any close friends or family nearby so no one is giving her a baby shower.

Also, Seth was injured in Iraq, requiring several surgeries on his foot and ankle, and they learned he will be needing yet another surgery in the near future.

Martha is such a wonderful person, I'd like to do something special and lift her spirits a bit so I'm asking for your help.

Here is what I'm asking:
1)  I would love to get a bunch of cards to send to Martha, and I've also set up an email address if anyone would like to email instead.  The address is BabyShowerSurprise@yahoo.com  All emails will be printed out and mailed to Martha.

2)  If anyone would like to send a gift or gift card (no amount is too small), that would be wonderful!  Gently used items and clothing would be gladly accepted.

3)  And, I don't want to leave out Dad-To-Be Seth.  Any cards, emails or small gifts for him would be welcomed.

I am having all cards or gifts sent to me, and I will forward them on to Martha. (I don't feel comfortable giving out her address without her permission.)  I would like to have all cards and/or gifts no later than Tuesday July 10.

If you want to participate or would like more info, email me at BabyShowerSurprise@yahoo.com and I'll provide you with more details.  Feel free to forward this onto your friends ~ The more the merrier!!!

You can see a picture of Martha and Seth here:

Thanks so much!!!

Slide show:)

As Some Come Home (YAY!:) Others Head Out

Two of the bloggers listed on the sidebar are coming home, Hurray!

Click here: The Online Chaplain: Thank You

Click here: Half a World Away: Fisher House Update, On the Way!

(and FYI....Sack in Iraq above has EXCEEDED his goal for the donations for the Fisher House, for the run he is making in the Chicago marathon by 180 % thus far....WAY TO GO, EVERYONE!:)

And, WELCOME HOME! to these fine soldiers, and all those who have served with them!

As they come home....some others are heading out. Yes, I'm talking about the guys of

Bad Voodoo Platoon

the platoon to which the most excellent  JP at Milblogging.com   belongs.

And, if you're looking for some soldiers to support? Why not these guys?

Click here: Bad Voodoo Platoon - Service & Support

The address to send mail and packages is listed on the link above, along with a list of items they would like to receive in the care packages.

And, if you'd like to know more about the guys in the platoon? Team members are listed here

In my humble opinion,LOL....another fine group of soldiers to 'show some love' to!

THIS...should be going viral by now,IMHO

I was late to the RCT 6 email party and didn't post about it till yesterday, as on Flag Day I was watching our Amry MP graduate from training

(and I'm going to say again "Platoon Honors Grad"!! because, if we don't brag on the boyfriend's son, who will? LOL:)

But, Grim over at Blackfive first posted about the Regimental Combat Team 6 hoping for emails of support ON Flag day

Click here: BLACKFIVE: Roundtable with Col. Simcock, Commander USMC RCT-6

and that's now FIVE days ago.

They are  up to 1,500 emails, according to today's update

And THEY aren't complaining, they are very appreciative, as evidenced by this blog post here on their blog

But, I guess I'm disappointed....I would have hoped this would go 'viral' by now.  It's so easy to send an email :) Don't think to yourself "oh my gosh, they need 6,00 emails!" Why not think "Hey, I can send One email today"?

So, I'm going to post it once again, and urge you all....Please SPREAD THE WORD!

Once again, per  Grim at Blackfive  , here's the email address:

And let's show some Marines some love

More pics:) and some Projects to pass on

Ok, the pic is just a 'teaser' :)....you can see All the pics I've uploaded to Flickr

here            http://www.flickr.com/photos/kasee102/

And now, it's Monday morning....back to the 'real world', and back to work for me later today.

In the meantime, here's two projects I came across that I wanted to pass on. Both are via my Angel friend, Lisa in DC, who is shaping up to be a fantastic blogger! (and I think she should be getting Way more hits,hint,hint...:)

First of all, want to send a supportive email to a Marine? here's how

and next...it's Never too early to 'Think Christmas', when you're a troop supporter!

There's lots more stuff going on out there in the blogosphere, I'm sure....I think I'll be spending the week playing 'catch-up' on emails and blogs, but these are two I wanted to pass along right away.

And, enjoy the pics:)

Hey,We're Home! and Congratulations,Dustin:)

Well, we got home Early this morning,Yay! 15 hours there on Tuesday, and 15 hours drive Back after Graduation on Thursday. NOT something I ever would really like to do again, LOL (the drive:)

Graduation was awesome, and my Big News is that Dustin was a

Platoon Honor Graduate

for his platoon!! Hurray! for Dustin!

The certificate reads:

"In recognition of exceptional performance....resulting in his selection as the most outstanding Soldier for ..(his platoon)."

He didn't tell us he was getting this, so wish someone had been there to take a picture of our faces when we opened the program and read it:)

I have some pics up, some of ours and some he had taken on his camera. He doesn't know I took two pics of him sleeping on the drive home,LOL,which he did for a large part of the drive....guess he was Really Tired:)

We rolled in at home about 3 am, and I have just now had time to sit down and write this post after uploading the pictures(and,of course, already starting to play around with some of the pictures:)  Tomorrow night we're having a party for him, to give all his friends a chance to stop by and see him, so I suppose it'll be a few days before I get back into the swing of blogging again,

but I did just want to pop in to say We're Back, He's Graduated! and now he's home for awhile :)

And also to once again say a big THANK YOU to all of you who sent cards for him!! He read them during the drive home, he thought that was really cool, to get cards from all over the country (and the world :)

WEDNESDAY HERO (and we're gone this week, have a good week!)

(I'm putting up this Wednesday Hero post early, as we will be gone this week to see Dustin graduate from Army training! :)

This Weeks Hero Was Suggested By Malinda

69-year-old Bert Brady has never stepped foot in Iraq or Afghanistan, yet many soldiers who have know who he is and appreciate what he's done for them.    You see, for the past year Mr. Brady has made a trip to the Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport nearly every morning to welcome home returning American troops.    Bert Brady, along with fellow veterans, is a member of the Welcome Home a Hero program. They make sure that every soldier who steps off a plane in Dallas gets a special homecoming.   Brady shows up each day with the goal of making soldiers feel appreciated and proud of their service. He's often joined by veterans of the Vietnam and Korean wars who did not get a warm reception when they returned from battle.   "We are not going to forget them like a lot of Vietnam soldiers have been forgotten," Brady said. "We are not going to forget the soldiers of today."   To read more about Bert Brady, you can go to ABCnews.com

Heroes Run

July 28, 2007 7:30 a.m.— 5K Run/1.5 Mile Walk/Children’s Fun Run

Hero’s run is being organized by the family members of U.S. Army Captain Travis Patriquin.  Travis was killed on December 06, 2006 in Ramadi, Iraq along side Marine Major Megan McClung and Army Gunner Vincent VJ Pomante, by a roadside bomb.  Travis left behind 3 beautiful children and a wife.  Travis, was the creator of “How to Win in Al Anbar” PowerPoint.  This PowerPoint has made its move up to the White House.  In honor of Travis, Megan and Vincent we have organized the HEROES RUN, a 5K, 1.5mile walk and Children’s Fun Run benefiting the Travis Patriquin Family Memorial Fund and the Children of Fallen Soldiers Relief Fund.

(Again, please go check out more about this here)

A Wonderful Update, Congratulations! to JP, and Soldiers Angels Web Surfing

First of all, Kat's husband is Home, as per this update

There's still some healing that needs to go on, but a big Thanks to all the 'prayer warriors' who responded to the request!
-----------
Next, a big CONGRATULATIONS! is in order for JP over at Milblogging.com
A fellow blogger from  Bad Voodoo Platoon  "outed" him with this post

(which explained for me all the comments on this post  "Website Update"  , over at Milblogging.com.)

So, Congratulations! SGT. Borda!!

(and also,Thank you! When you post something like this  Blogger creates Google Custom Search Engine for Milblogs , and give me the 'Hat Tip" for passing it on? That enables me to say to my family  "See, there's SOMEONE who appreciates all the time I spend on the computer!"  And that is...Priceless,LOL:)
-------------

And now, on to Soldiers Angels Web Surfing for the past week.

"Reverse" Mail Call, and I may 'throw like a girl,but..."

"Reverse" mail call is just when I write about letters Received from the troops.

As every Soldiers Angel member knows, that's when you do the 'happy dance',LOL. (and as the Family member of every Soldiers Angel knows....that's when you roll your eyes and say 'oh,gosh, Mom must've gotten another letter back from a soldier, since she's acting all excited and goofy.")

Well, I was able to do the 'happy dance' this past week, as I got the Sweetest letter from a Marine. (which I don't think 'sweet' is usually a term that you immediately think of, when you think 'Marine'?:)

I am always astounded, and humbled, by complete strangers that I send my slightly goofy letters off to (and more about my writing later in the post,lol)...who take the time in the middle of serving in a War zone, for pete's sakes, to say 'thank you'.

What the young Marine had to say was awesomely wonderful, and warmed my heart no end.

To quote in part:

"Soldiers Angels has been incredible concerning the level of support they've shown my platoon and I.  It's people like you that remind us of our true mission."

and "I've actually been surprised, by how many people write just to say thank you".

But mostly I wanted to share the letter because the following is why I, and every other member of Soldiers Angels (and all the other troop support sites) Do what we Do.

"I hope that you continue to write to service members. Whether they write back or not, I assure you they are grateful.  I certainly am."

None of us who write to the troops ever EXPECT to receive a reply.....but, when you get one like that? It just renews your commitment to writing that much more!

Thank YOU, to "J" :) You made my week! :)

(And if you're at all interested in writing to the troops yourself? Please check out Soldiers Angels at   http://www.soldiersangels.org/   )

---------

Now, for the part about my writing? I may 'throw like a girl",LOL....but apparently, I write...like a Guy??

My friend over at   Random Threads  had a post earlier this week "Does your writing give clues to your gender?"

and if you go by and check her post out, you can test yourself.

Beware, though. I tested myself, 57 ways to Sunday,LOL.....and the results ALWAYS came back that my writing was MALE.

I know it says it's not 100% accurate....but this is really messing with my head:)

This Weeks Soldiers Were Suggested By Mary Ann

Col. David Sutherland

Col. David Sutherland(Left) 45 Years Old From Toledo, Ohio Commander, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division

Since being deployed to the Diyala province of Iraq in November 2006, Col. David Sutherland, along with brigade Chaplain Maj. Charlie Fenton, pictured on the right, has made it a point to visit every wounded soldier and say goodbye to each and everyone of his men who've lost their life.

Four of his soldiers died on one day in April 2007 and the bad news arrived at his office in waves -- a knock on the door, a note handed in by an aide, heads bowed, knowing glances exchanged. Aides say Sutherland walks to the mortuary affairs tent at his base and embraces the dead bodies of his men.

"I hug all my fallen soldiers", said Sutherland. "They are my own".

Diyala province is one of the worst places in Iraq. Public beheadings of Iraqi police, tribal wars, sectarian wars and al-Qaida.

"I didn't come here thinking it'd be easy. No one told me, 'You're gonna get 9 hours of sleep a night and you're not gonna lose soldiers'. But I believe this is the place for me." "As a soldier, I want to be here on the ground," he said. "As an American, I want it to end."

Why I Love Nebraska! (Shirley Phelps-Roper Arrested June 5)

Yes, a member of the Westboro Baptist "Church" was finally arrested!

Phelps-Roper Arrested in Nebraska

Funeral protester arrested for allowing son to step on flag

Woman Arrested During Soldier's Funeral

Update  Over at  A Soldiers Mind

Terri researched the Nebraska flag statute, and it reads thusly:

Section 28-928
Mutilating a flag; penalty; flag, defined.

(1) A person commits the offense of mutilating a flag if such person intentionally casts contempt or ridicule upon a flag by mutilating, defacing, defiling, burning, or trampling upon such flag.

(2) Flag as used in this section shall mean any flag, ensign, banner, standard, colors, or replica or representation thereof which is an official or commonly recognized symbol of the United States or the State of Nebraska.

(3) Mutilation of a flag is a Class III misdemeanor.

(source:  )

(Kudos to Terri, for researching the statute!:)

I'm seeing comments in various blogs applauding the arrest, but stating that the Nebraska flag statute is unconstitutional.

Following up on Terri's research led me to this site

which is pretty interesting reading. It's got a page listing  State Flag-Protection Laws

It will be interesting to see how all this plays out, in the days ahead.

Perhaps the WBC should have researched the Nebraska state motto before traveling there?
"Equality before the law"

or perhaps they just didn't know, as a Nebraskan friend told me

"We don't mess around in Nebraska."

A Dictionary definition, and a paper on Milblogging to pass on

I have been remiss, in not adding 'Snog Dot" of   Incoherent Ramblings  to my blogroll, which has now been rectified:) (Hey, this IS someone I actually met at  the  Milblog Conference!)

So, I'm over at his blog today and notice this Quiz in one of his postings

Click here: - Quiz Galaxy - - How will you be defined in the dictionary?

and I take the quiz, using both my AOL screen name, and then just my name. I'm not too sure I liked the results,LOL.

kasee267 --
[adjective]:

Smelling like turnips at all times

Kathi --
[adjective]:

Like in nature to a banana peel

(although maybe it's appropriate? everyone who knows me, knows that I like to EAT,lol. But.....do I really seem most like an 'adjective'? I guess I always thought of myself more as a noun? or maybe a verb?:)
-----

And, I haven't seen anyone really mentioning this, thought it was worth passing on. A three part paper on Milblogging, with more to come.

(and how did you find this,Kathi, while 'smelling like a turnip',you may be asking yourself? All I can say is hooray for Technorati, and geeky grandmothers who surf there:)

I must fly, have to pick up a daughter at school!

Urgent.Prayer Request (and please spread the word)UPDATED.

Got this news from Chromed Curses just a few minutes ago:

Prayer Request

I got a call from Kat in GA and her husband is in the hospital.

She was at a funeral a couple of hours away from home and her husband was working on one of the cars. He collapsed in the driveway with heat stroke. Kat’s 13 year old called 911 and her hubby was rushed to the hospital. He spent the night in ICU with a 105 degree temperature. He was incoherent and dehydrated severely.

He is now back down to normal temperatures, but still hospitalized at least through today. Kat hasn’t heard anything about tomorrow. When they examined her husband, they found the beginnings of pneumonia, which may have worsened her husband’s susceptibility to the heat.

Please keep them all in your prayers for a quick recovery. If you have a blog, please put up a prayer request. Thanks

Sending up prayers here. And please feel free to pass the word on.
---------
June 5: Today's update is not so good.
He has a fever again. He is all sick and hurting again--chills aches abdominal pain. :( Was doing good yesterday but today not so much. :( Kat.

So, please, let's continue to keep those prayers and encouraging thoughts going!

(And, my heartfelt Thanks, to Indian Chris at Right-Wing and Right Minded , for passing on the word about this to the  Wednesday Hero Blogroll  members. )

TEN DAYS TILL GRAD! and Updates on "everyone and my brother"

Yep, only 10 more days till  the boyfriend's son

graduates from Army Basic Training! Woo Hoo!(or,probably, I should say "Hooah!":)

(and sheesh, good thing he never reads my blog, or he'd probably croak that I'm plastering his face all over the 'net,LOL)

As far as the 'updates on everyone and my brother"? I guess I should more specifically say "my brother's Newest Addition to the family"

Here is my newest niece, being held by her older sister

Sigh, I wish they didn't live 8,000 miles away. (I think that's right, lol, never was good at distances, though, I had to Google it) I've never met his oldest daughter yet, now I have TWO nieces to meet!!

(Update: ROFL. I was so busy posting the pic, guess I didn't take time to look closely...my youngest sis and a friend both had to point out to me that Tabatha is flashing the 'peace' sign. Sigh.....another 'senior moment', I guess:)

Got to give a shout out to Another friend who just became a new Auntie:)

(and I am just over the moon, when I check the pledge page, at how the word is spreading. Go, Team Sack!)

Got to mention my old friend JP from Milblogging.com.....He and the Bad Voodoo platoon are getting ready to deploy, and they are going to be, I think, the 'bloggingest bunch ever':) Go by their page to check out the blogs, and the Greetings videos they've posted for family and friends.

There have been updates on two CaringBridge pages from recovering soldiers that I'm late in passing on

Eric Edmundson

Jose Pequeno

We must never forget that for some, the battle continues long after they have returned home.

And continuing along the lines of 'never forget', a blogger listed in my sidebar begins the story of how he spent Memorial Day weekend   Click here: Blog Machine City: hail the victorious dead

and a fellow Angel never forgets to mention those being remembered by the Living Legends team

(And speaking of the Living Legends Team ? I owe a HUGE 'Thank You', to the benefactor who read my post about having to temporarily take a break from the team and felt led to make it possible for me to return to being a part of that team.  I don't believe it's possible to express adequately how grateful I am for someone like that....but, you know who you are, and my heartfelt Thanks goes out to you.)

Want to send some mail? Cindy at White Rose's adventures is continuing to do what she can to get mail to those in Basic Training  Click here: White Rose's Adventures

and has set up a MySpace page for that purpose for right now.

Lastly, apropos of nothing whatsoever to do with anything,LOL....I have opened up my 'family blog' (subtitled 'watching paint dry',so that should give you a clue what to expect) to the public, and you can read one of my most recent entries here

just to hopefully pass on a Monday smile:)

That's all for the updates today. Thank you for stopping by here to read!

Soldiers Angels Web Surfing

Well, this 'weekly feature' sort of fell by the wayside last week, but it's that time again.

Update on "Go, Team Sack!"

Yesterday, I posted about one of my fave milbloggers,  "Sack in Iraq" at Half a World Away . During his deployment, he's been training to run a marathon (which is amazing in itself, I think if I were deployed to a 'really hot place', I'd be lucky just to function,LOL)

Anyways, he's going to be running in the Chicago marathon in October. But he recently discovered that he could raise money for the Fisher House While running in the marathon. And so he has registered to do that.

I was most excited today to discover that some of the other bloggers that I alerted to this have already put up posts about it, Yay! Thanks So much to them!!

and in just a few short hours, his pledges on his pledge website    had already DOUBLED!! Woo Hoo! This is why I think the Milblogging community, and the Internet, ROCK!!

Now, I know we have 18 weeks to help him do this

but I was just so excited by what seems to be such a great start that I HAD to pass the news about this on!! :)  "One Day, Pledges Doubled"!!

GO,TEAM SACK!!!

(and my thanks,also, to

who immediately went by and donated, plus left this comment on Steve's page that says exactly how I feel, too

"amazing people like you, Sack, whose idea of multi-tasking is simultaneously defending our country, raising a family, and raising money for military support organizations."
